In 1840, Blaettermann legally separated from his wife Elizabeth Charlotte Dean Blaettermann and was dismissed from the university for physically assaulting his wife in public more than once. His dismissal followed years of complaints about his unprofessional conduct and unpopular, ineffective teaching. He resided in Albemarle County.
