- Description
- Tony (or Tone) was a Black man who lived in Bound Brook, NJ, in the late 18th century. He was enslaved by the Rev. Israel Read, who was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Bound Brook from 1750 until his death in 1793. When the pastor died, he bequeathed Tony to his sons Thomas and Archibald, who then sold Tony to John Neilson in 1798. The sale contract stipulated that Tony would be sold for a term of 5 years, and the wording of the sale contract seems to imply that Tony would be free at the expiration of this term, i.e. in 1803.
