- Phebe-Gertruda was born in 1805, the daughter of Nancy. Phebe-Gertruda and her mother were held in bondage by Gertrude Parker, the widow and executrix of the estate of James Parker Sr. (1725-1797) of Perth Amboy, NJ. Under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804, Phebe-Gertruda was considered a slave for a term of 21 years and would become eligible for emancipation upon reaching that age.
