Description

Phillis was a black woman born around 1795. She lived in New Brunswick, NJ. She was enslaved by Staats Van Deursen, the Treasurer of Queen's College (now Rutgers University) in New Brunswick. In 1817, Staats Van Deursen sold Phillis to a man named Jacob Klady, a New Jersey landholder who was getting ready to move to Ouachita Parish in Louisiana to establish a plantation. Klady took Phillis to Louisiana with him. Phillis's fate after moving to Louisiana is uncertain.
