- Description
- Jacob Klady was an enslaver who lived in New Brunswick, NJ, in the early 19th century. In 1817, he divested of his landholdings in New Jersey and moved to Ouachita, Louisiana, to establish a plantation there. He sold a farm of 139 acres to the Township of North Brunswick for $6,992 for use as the municipality's "poorhouse farm." He then bought enslaved people in New Jersey and took them to Louisiana. Among the people he brought to Louisiana were Phillis and Dinah (two young women Klady bought from Staats Van Deursen and William Van Deursen) and a young man named Ben (purchased from James Smith).
