West Oak Plantation was a 2,800-acre plantation owned by Jesse Batey, who in 1838 purchased 64 enslaved people from Thomas Mulledy, S.J., to forcibly labor on this plantation. It was located on the Bayou Maringouin and on property that has since been incorporated as the village of Maringouin in Iberville Parish, Louisiana.
When Batey died in 1852, his heirs sold the plantation to John S. Barrow. In 1858, Emily Woolfolk, the widow of notorious slave trader Austin Woolfolk, took possession of the West Oak Plantation and the people who forcibly labored on it. The Woolfolks maintained ownership of the plantation when the people once sold by the Jesuits and their children were emancipated in 1864.
John Barrow gave the plantation the name of West Oak, which is now used to refer to the plantation when owned by Jesse Batey. - Place Type
