1838, Isaiah Queen, Resistance (Freedom Seeking)
- Title
- 1838, Isaiah Queen, Resistance (Freedom Seeking)
- Description
- Isaiah ("Isaias," an enslaved man of 21 years of age from White Marsh) was included on a list of 272 enslaved persons compiled by the Jesuits to plan for the sale that was executed in 1838. He "ran away" while the sale was under consideration. Each person is listed in this census with their ages and other information that determined their value as property. Between 1837 and 1838, the Jesuits also noted events that affected the availability of several individuals for the sale. The Jesuits organized this list by plantations: people were listed with others who worked at the same site and thereunder with family members who also worked at those sites.
