Louisa Mahoney Mason was born in St. Inigoes in May 1812 to Harry Mahoney and Anna Mahoney. She was the sister of Bibiana Mahoney Butler, Robert Mahoney, Nelly Mahoney, Harry Mahoney, Gabe Mahoney, Daniel Mahoney, and Anna Mahoney Jones.
Louisa was enslaved at St. Inigoes when the 1838 sale was being planned. Louisa was warned by Father John Carbery to hide in the woods with her mother to avoid being sent to Louisiana. Many of her sisters and brothers were sent to Louisiana as part of the sale. Louisa returned to St. Inigoes and Father John Carbery purchased her from Henry Johnson, who had purchased her as part of the 1838 sale. In 1864, Louisa and her daughter were the last enslaved people emancipated by the Maryland Jesuits.
Years later, Louisa married Alex Mason, who worked as a carpenter at St. Inigoes. Louisa and Alex had six children: Mary Ann Mason Bennett (1849-1883), Charity E. Mason Lee 1851-1946, Thomas Mason 1853-1910, Daniel H. Mason (1853-1925), Josephine Mason Barnes (1857-1944), and Robert Mason (1859-?). In 1861, Louisa’s husband Alex Mason was murdered on the highway between St. Nicholas Church and St. Mary’s City. After emancipation, Louisa continued to work as a domestic servant for the Maryland Jesuits until retiring to live with her daughter.
Louisa died in Maryland in 1909 at the age of 97. Her funeral was held on Saturday, July 3, 1909. - Sibling of
