- Description
- Located on a peninsula where the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay meet, St. Inigoes was the first religious community established by the Jesuits in Maryland. In 1632, Andrew White, S.J. purchased St. Inigoes from the chieftain of the Yaocomico nation. Father White had established St. Ignatius Church (St. Inigoes, Maryland). The Jesuit missionaries added land to this estate that ultimately became a 2,800-acre plantation that exploited enslaved laborers. Its location placed St. Inigoes at the center of several military conflicts, including the American Revolution, War of 1812, and the Civil War. After 1876, students and faculty from Georgetown College and Woodstock Theological College established a villa used for summer vacations. In 1918, the Jesuits transferred this religious community to Ridge, Maryland. In 1942: CRCC sold the land comprising St. Inigoes to U.S. Navy who established Patuxent Naval Base at the site.
