- Description
- Established in 1642, St. Thomas Manor is the oldest, continuously-operated Jesuit community in the world. St. Ignatius Church in Chapel Point serves its pastoral seat. Comprised of more than 4,400 acres of land, the Jesuits exploited enslaved labor to operate a tobacco plantation and leased a substantial portion to tenant farmers. Between 1806 and 1830, Carmelite nuns established a monastery at Pomfret on a 1,000-acre plantation that exploited enslaved labor. Beginning in 1958, the Jesuits of the Maryland Province established the Loyola-on-the-Potomac Retreat House (Faulkner, Md.), which operates through the present day.
